Chet Whitaker Memorial Scholarship Foundation
Honoring the Memory of Chet
The Chet Whitaker Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Chet Whitaker, who tragically succumbed to pancreatic cancer in June 2023. Chet was 70 years old when he passed. More specifically, the foundation seeks to pay tribute to Chet’s legacy of leadership and dedication by supporting young men and women in education after high school, be it at community college, college or university or trade school.
Making an Impact
Chet was responsible for reestablishing the South Stars High School Hockey club team in 1990 while his oldest son played for the South Stars.
Chet was the team manager for four years from 1990-1994. During the early 1990s, Chet played a pivotal role in establishing something that continues to flourish on the south side of Indianapolis, Indiana, to this very day. His actions have had a profound impact on numerous young men and women and their families. He took immense pride in being a part of something that touched the lives of so many people.
Each year, two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1500.00 each to two seniors playing for the South Stars Hockey Teams. The scholarships assist with costs in attending the community college, college or university or trade school of their choice.
Consideration for the Scholarship
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must be a senior on either the Red or White teams for the South Stars. All applicants must be in good academic standing and model the leadership, sportsmanship, and dedication that Chet displayed throughout his life. Some of these standards will be evaluated and determined in collaboration with the current coaching staff for both teams. Any high school seniors who are members of the Red or White teams for the South Stars are encouraged to apply.
Awarding of the Chet Whitaker Memorial Scholarship is contingent on several criteria including acceptance to and enrollment in a community college, two- or four-year college or university or trade school, and a complete application. Additionally, applicants are required to submit an essay discussing how they feel their leadership, sportsmanship and dedication skills from their time spent with the South Stars will help them in their secondary education and in everyday life. Scholarship recipients are expected to use their resources wisely and uphold a high standard of conduct.
